Apparently praising your kids too much is a bad thing. It demotivates them, tunes them out and probably has them saying my favourite 'whatever' quicker than you can say 'good girl!'.
Now, I am pretty sure I praised my seven year old daughter with great enthusiasm yesterday for going to the toilet to do a wee... so we can safely say I am guilty of over-praising.
I investigated the possible aliments inflicted for my lastest post on Village Voices. Come say hi.

Who has time to cut watermelon into heart shapes?
That is such a good question, Fiona. Not me, obviously. I'm too busy over-praising the kids... x
As it is meant to take seven 'praises' to counter the effect of one criticism then I think that maybe we should all be 'over-praisers'! As long as you are genuine in your appreciation of what they're up to then I think it will do no harm.
No, praising others is a very good thing! The worlds tears us down so we need others, especially our parents, to build us up. You are doing the right thing.
Gorgeous photo,Bron:) Yep, over-praising no goodie ... slap on the wrist for you;) LOL Descriptive praise is better. Describe what you see. It's thoughtful and tuned in. It's a hard little habit to break, isn't it? Lecture over;) xxx
I don't know about the praising, have not kids but love the heart shaped melon? is it?

This was great Bron. I do understand the praising for the toilet though, my 8 yr old wil dance around for hours to avoid interrupting play..x
I'm a praiser, I just can't help myself..I'm when my kids have their own children, praising will be back in.. lol!
Love the watermelon. I saw some other person had cut their kids watermelon into lovely shapes. I tried it. The eleven year old looked at me, burst into uncontrollable fits of you know what and said "yeah, good one mum."
Yes, I'm an overpraiser. But my husband says that is me making up for the few times I snap at them unexpectantly.
I need to find some balance somewhere. Perhaps start with less praise which will immediately annihilate the flipside.
That'll work... x
